Stegosaurus – Concept to Completion

A quick glance at our first dinosaur model for Dinosauria, the lone Jurassic dinosaur of the bunch, Stegosaurus! (for full size images, click on the thumbnails)

First, we conceptualize the shape and colors:

After iterating on the concept image, we model the high-poly version, which we will use to create a normal map:

Then we break that down to the low-poly version:

Then we paint the texture and apply the normal map. The Stegosaurus is ready for the game! (at 2177 tris):

  1. Nice looking dino!

  2. I thought you might like to know that Stegosaurus has recently been discovered to have bony ossicles covering its throat region. These ossicles probably allowed Stegosaurus to browse in thickets of thorny vegetation, or to get at the cones of cycads encased in their thorny leaves. Great colors by the way.

  3. Oooh, interesting, thanks! I love this kind of feedback. I’ll try to get it in there, though we might not be able to since we’ve pretty much locked this one down.

  4. Amazing. Lovely job!
